UDC Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Robin Williams to Play for the Jamaican Women’s National Basketball Team

Washington, DC - University of the District of Columbia Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Robin Williams was chosen to play for the Jamaican Women’s National Basketball team this summer. Williams is in her second season as an assistant at UDC, and is a native of Bronx, NY. Williams is a first generation American of Jamaican decent.

The UDC Women’s basketball season ended with a 2 and 1 record in the National Independent Classic (hosted by UDC in the Sports Complex – February 25-26-27), a 19 and 9 slate overall, and 78 wins in the last 4 seasons. Overall, good work and a successful 2010-11 campaign. But the Firebird women have their sights set on getting back to the NCAA tournament. Coach Jay Butler recently weighed in on this past season.

Firebirds end season with 84-60 win over Urbana

Washington, DC: February 27, 2011 – The UDC women’s basketball team (19-9) celebrated “senior day” with an 84-60 trumping of the Urbana University Blue Knights (11-17) today at the UDC sports complex. The game was part of the 2011 Independent Invitational Women’s Basketball Classic, and third place in the tournament was on the line. As a result, the Firebirds made sure to bring their “A” game defensively, which they used to jump out to a 14-point lead in the first six minutes of the game.

Washington, DC: February 18, 2011--The University of the District of Columbia will host the UDC 2011 Independent Schools Invitational Women’s Basketball Classic, February 25, 26 and 27. Six independent schools will participate in the three day Classic, including Central State University (OH), King College (TN), Palm Beach Atlantic University (FL), Urbana University (OH), Washington Adventist University (MD) and the University of the District of Columbia.

Washington, DC: February 25, 2011 - The UDC women’s basketball team (17-9) couldn’t complete their second-half comeback, as they fell to the King College Tornadoes (10-15), 72-69 tonight at the UDC sports complex. The two teams were meeting for the third time this season as part of the 2011 Independent Invitational Women’s Basketball Classic, hosted by UDC. The Firebirds had won the two previous meetings this season by a combined 17 points, and were seeded #1 entering the tournament

Wilberforce, Ohio: February 19, 2011-- It didn't take the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team long to dispense with the Central State University Marauders today at Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium in Wilberforce, Ohio. Junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mass Media- Mt. Laurel, NJ) led the Firebirds to an 85-43 triumph over Marauders by scoring 16 points, pulling down 3 boards, dishing out 2 assists and making 4 steals.

UDC Falls to Bowie State, 68-55

Bowie, MD: February 16, 2011-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team fell to the Bowie State University Bulldogs, 68-55, tonight in the A,C, Jordan Arena in Bowie, Maryland. The Firebirds had a poor shooting night, making only 28 percent (22-79) of their field goals.

Salem, WVA: February 12, 2011—Junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting- Mobile, Al) paced the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a lopsided, 98-48, win over the Salem International University Fighting Tigers today in Salem, West Virginia. Bonner scored a season-high 24 points, 11 of which came in the first half, while leading four players in double figures for the game. UDC improved to 15-7 with this win while Salem fell to 0-20.

Washington, DC: February 8, 2011 – The UDC women’s basketball team (14-7) erupted for its largest scoring output of the season in a 97-39 victory over the Washington Adventist University Shock (0-18) tonight at the UDC sports complex.Led by a balanced scoring attack that included six players scoring in double-figures, the Firebirds raced to a 31-point halftime lead. Their first half lead became insurmountable when, after trailing 1-0 to start the period, UDC scored 26 unanswered points to essentially put the game away.

Bristol, TN: February 3, 2011-- Graduate student guard Niqyk Hughes (Public Administration-Fort Worth, TX) led the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team to a 70-57 win over the King College Tornadoes, tonight, in Bristol, Tennessee. It was the Firebirds' second win over the Tornadoes this season and lifts their overall record to 13-7. King fell to 6-17.

Fayetteville, NC: January 24, 2011-- After riding a 5 game win streak, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team faltered tonight and fell to the Fayetteville State University Broncos, 69-62, at the Capel Arena in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Firebirds led 33-27 at the break, but the Broncos came storming back in the second half, outscoring them 42-29. UDC fell to 12-7 overall, while Fayetteville improved to 5-11.

Washington, DC: January 18, 2011 – The UDC women’s basketball team (12-6) made quick work of the Salem International University Fighting Tigers (0-16) tonight, as the Firebirds won for the fifth straight game, 92-31.The 92 points were a season-high for the Firebirds, as was the 61-point margin of victory. The 12 wins UDC now has on the year matches last season’s win total.

The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team will be in action on Sunday, January 16, against the Philadelphia University Rams in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This will be the first meeting of the teams.
