Firebirds Send the Marauders Down to an 85-43 Defeat to Sweep Season Series

Wilberforce, Ohio: February 19, 2011-- It didn't take the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team long to dispense with the Central State University Marauders today at Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium in Wilberforce, Ohio. Junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mass Media- Mt. Laurel, NJ) led the Firebirds to an 85-43 triumph over the Marauders by scoring 16 points, pulling down 3 boards, dishing out 2 assists and making 4 steals. The Firebirds improved to 16-8 overall with this win, while the Marauders fell to 8-14.

For all practical purposes, the outcome of this game was clear at the end of the first half, as the Firebirds outscored the Marauders 40-19 in this period alone. It was all downhill from then on for the Marauders as they could not contain the Firebirds scoring, which saw them outscored 45-24 in the second half.

The Firebirds shot 45 percent (17-38) from the field during the first half to the Marauder's 27 percent (9-33), 27 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc to the Marauder's 0 percent (0-4), and 43 percent ( 3-7) from the free-throw line to the Marauder's 33 percent (1-3).

Things did not improve for the Marauders in the second half and they ended the game at 27 percent (17-63) shooting from the field, 0 percent (0.0) from beyond the arc and 56 percent (9-16) from the charity stripe. The Firebirds nearly outgunned them in all scoring categories for the game shooting 44 percent (36-81) from the field, 37 percent (7-19) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (6-12) from the charity stripe.

Joining Johnson in double digit scoring for the Firebirds were freshman forward Monet Nias (Criminology, Glen Burnie, MD) with 13 points, 4 rebounds, junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting-Mobile, AL) with 11 points, seven rebounds, 1 block and senior forward/center Lillian McGill ( Criminal Justice-Sumter, SC), who scored 10 points and pulled down 12 boards for her tenth double-double of the season.

Scoring in double digits for the Marauders were Taylor Hanson with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist, and Adrianne Griffith, who scored 11 points, pulled down 5 boards, made 1 assist and steal each.

The Firebirds will remain in the Buckeye state for a February 21 contest against the Urbana University Blue Knights.  They will return home for the UDC Independent Schools Invitational Classic on February 25, 26 & 27, which they are hosting.
