Firebirds Get Big 70-57 Win over King to Sweep Season Series

Bristol, TN: February 3, 2011-- Graduate student guard Niqyk Hughes (Public Administration-Fort Worth, TX) led the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team to a 70-57 win over the King College Tornadoes, tonight, in Bristol, Tennessee. It was the Firebirds' second win over the Tornadoes this season and lifts their overall record to 13-7. King fell to 6-17.

Posting 16 points in 22 minutes of play, Hughes was one of three Firebirds scoring in double figures.  Senior forward/center Lillian McGill posted her 9th double-double of the season, tallying 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting-Mobile, AL) added 14 points and 1 rebound.

Junior forward Dohnay Banice (Business Administration-Wilmington, DE) collected 10 rebounds and junior guard Jasmine Rich dished out 9 assists.

UDC took a 36-30 point lead into halftime; they came back in the second half to outscore King 34-27. The Tornadoes had two brief leads in the first half, but the Firebirds opened a 10 point lead in the second half, 46-36. The Tornadoes started the second half with 9 unanswered points, but the Firebirds came back to score five straight and built a 62-51 lead with 6:34 remaining and maintained a double digit margin the rest of the game.

UDC was 29 for 64 (45 percent) from the field, while King was 15 for 58 (26 percent). The Firebirds only attempted a total of 4 free-throws in the game but was perfect at the line, while King made 23 out of 24 attempts.

The Firebirds controlled the boards, pulling down 42 to the Tornadoes' 36, and their bench outscored the Tornadoes' 32 to 6.

UDC returns to the court on February 8, at home against the Washington Adventist University Shock.
