Jamilia Bonner scored a season-high 24 points at Salem

Firebirds Breeze through Fighting Tigers, 98-48

Salem, WVA: February 12, 2011—Junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting- Mobile, Al) paced the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team to a lopsided, 98-48, win over the Salem International University Fighting Tigers today in Salem, West Virginia. Bonner scored a season-high 24 points, 11 of which came in the first half, while leading four players in double figures for the game. UDC improved to 15-7 with this win while Salem fell to 0-20.

Salem took a quick lead at the start of the game, but following two ties, UDC took control and extended their lead to 27 points at the break. UDC shot 36 percent (17 for 47) in the first half, but their point total was significantly enhanced by Salem committing 11 personal fouls, sending the Firebirds to the free throw line where they converted 13 of 14 for a phenomenal 93 percent conversion rate for the half.

The Firebirds improved their second half  field goal shooting to (47 percent (18 for 38)and went on to shoot 41 percent (35 for 85) from the field for the game, 31 percent (8 for 26) from beyond the arc and 67 percent ( 20 for 30) from the charity stripe.

Joining Bonner in double figures were graduate student guard Niqky Hughes (Public Administration-Ft.th, TX)  with her first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 boards. Junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mass Media-Mt. Laurel, NJ) added 15 points, 3 rebounds and junior guard Brittany Clements (Political Science-Washington, DC) chipped in 12 points and grabbed 2 rebounds.

Two Salem players were in double figures for the game. Brittany Wells scored 18 points while Amber Few added 12. For the game Salem shot 32 percent (17 for 54) from the field, 24 percent (4 for 17) from beyond the arc and 72 percent (10 for 14) from the charity stripe.

UDC led in all statistical categories, including getting 69 bench points to Salem's 5, and converting 33 turnovers to 40 points. They also led Salem 29 to 8 in second chance points coming from 56 offensive rebounds.

UDC returns to action on February 16, in a re-match against across-town rival Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. UDC defeated Bowie 54-40 on December 8.
