UDC Falls to Bowie State, 68-55

Bowie, MD: February 16, 2011-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team fell to the Bowie State University Bulldogs, 68-55, tonight at the A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Maryland. The Firebirds had a poor shooting night, making only 28 percent (22-79) of their field goals for the game.

The defeat enabled Bowie State to avenge an earlier loss to UDC and improved their overall season record to 16-8, while UDC fell to 15-8.

Three Firebirds were in double digit scoring, led by junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting-Mobile, AL) with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits were junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mass Media- Mt. Laurel, NJ) with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and junior forward Dohnay Banice (Business Administration-Wilmington, DC), with 10 points and 12 rebounds, to post her second double-double of the season.

The Bulldogs led most of the first half, going into the break with a 35-28 advantage, shooting 46 percent (15-33) from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc (3-8) and 50 percent (2-4) from the charity stripe. The Firebirds managed to shoot only 28 percent (11-40) from the field for the first half, 22 percent (5-22) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (1-2) from the free throw line.

Bowie State put the game away in the second half on 35 percent ( 10-29) from the field, 63 percent ( 12-19) from the charity stripe, an overall 40 percent (25-62) from the field for the game and 61 percent ( 14-23) from the charity stripe.  

Four Bowie State players were in double figures for the game, led by Lakisha Walker with 13 points, 3 rebounds, followed by Chanita Jordan with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and Juliette Turner with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brianna Taylor added 10 points and 3 rebounds to the winning effort.

Turnovers also contributed to the Firebirds loss as the Bulldogs converted 16 turnovers to 22 points while UDC got 12 points from Bowie turnovers. UDC held the advantage in second chance points, getting 14 to Bowie's 11 from offensive rebounds.

The Firebirds will see action again on February 19, against Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.
