Firebirds Cross Country Team Volunteers at Light the Night Walk in Support of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
ROCKVILLE, MD - It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon as the Firebirds Women's Cross Country and Track & Field team headed to Rockville Town Center for a day of community service.
With several walks taking place throughout the country in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk to raise awareness and funds for blood cancer patients, the Women's Cross Country team offered its support by being a part of the set up team at Rockville Town Center. The student-athletes lifted and placed sand bags, assembled hundreds of lanterns, set up the area for the kids entertainment center, put up and dressed all tables and areas for registration, set up stations for walkers, and set up booths for all groups involved in the walk.
According to head coach Alton McKenzie, the Firebirds played an important role in ensuring the walk was a success.
"It was a tremendous experience for the entire group knowing we were a part of setting up the entire area for the Light the Night Walk in Rockville. It is even more meaningful when [the cause] hits close to home, as I've had first-hand experience losing a family member to a blood cancer. This group of student-athletes suggested participating in this activity without my input, and its significance doesn't go unnoticed…
"It's hard to find someone who's life hasn't been impacted by cancer so as a group we were really happy to be involved in this activity. We look forward to participating in other events throughout the year as we look to be good citizens in the communities which we live."
