Firebirds Shine at TCNJ Indoor Opener, Highlighted by Victories in High Jump, Weight Throw, and 4x400m Relay
New, York, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia women's track and field team delivered a solid performance at theTCNJ Opener. The Firebirds earned victories in the Women's High Jump, Women's Weight Throw, and Women's 4x400m Relay while placing top-three in several other events.
Victories:
- Zoe Shaw won the Women's High Jump, clearing 1.58m (5-02.25). She also secured second place in the Women's Triple Jump with a mark of 10.84m (35-06.75).
- Emmanuela Katou Kouami dominated the Women's Weight Throw, winning with a throw of 15.01m (49-03.00). She also placed seventh in the Women's Shot Put with a mark of 10.01m (32-10.25).
- The 4x400m relay "A" team of Ayesha Jarrett, Kayla Cooper, Yalix Lina and Samantha Morrison claimed first place with a time of 4:02.03.
Sprints and Hurdles:
- Iyanna Jackson delivered standout performances in the Women's 60m, finishing second in the final with a time of 7.74s and winning her prelim heat in 7.90.
- Kayleigh Shelton placed fifth in the Women's 60m Hurdles Final, improving her preliminary time to finish in 9.42s.
Mid-Distance:
- Samantha Morrison was runner up in the Women's 1000m, finishing with a time of 3:09.81.
- Yalix Lina secured a third-place finish in the Women's 600m with a time of 1:41.57.
Additional Top Performances:
- Kayla Cooper and Dayna Thompson placed third (41.23) and fifth (41.61), respectively, in the Women's 300m. Cooper's time is the second fastest time ran by a Firebird- behind Thompson's 40.23s record which was set during the 2022-23 season.
UDC is off for the rest of the year and will continue competition on January 12th at the Kaye & JJ Smith Invite in Winchester, VA.
