
UDC Women's Tennis Fall Season comes to a Close in ECC Championship Semi-Final
Flushing, N.Y.- #3 University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 defeat against #2 St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) in a challenging East Coast Conference semi-final match at the QC Bubble. Despite strong efforts in both singles and doubles play, the Firebirds saw their Fall season come to a close.
In doubles, UDC's top pair of Desire Parn and Polina Zelentsova secured a 6-2 victory against Courtney Fyvie and Elita Silins (STAC) at No. 1 doubles. However, STAC claimed victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, winning the doubles point. Brons/Kryuchkova (STAC) defeated Claudia Bahamon Lopez and Célia Bastin 6-2, and Semmartin/Caneves (STAC) swept Lina Benjelloun and Nadja Zmukic 6-0.
In singles, STAC quickly secured the win with decisive victories:
- Courtney Fyvie defeated UDC's Claudia Bahamon Lopez 6-1, 4-2 (retirement) at No. 3 singles.
- At No. 6 singles, Ombeline Robilliart (STAC) triumphed over Nadja Zmukic 6-0, 6-1.
- Kateryna Kryuchkova (STAC) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lina Benjelloun at No. 5 singles.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished:
- Desire Parn (UDC) was locked in a competitive match against ECC Player of the Year Anaya Brons (STAC), trailing 2-6, 4-4 before the match was called.
- Polina Zelentsova (UDC) was battling Elita Silins (STAC) and had the upper hand, leading 5-3 in the second set after losing the first 3-6.
- Célia Bastin (UDC) was down 3-6, 3-4 against Elise Semmartin (STAC).
Order of Completion
- Doubles: 3, 1, 2*
- Singles: 3, 6, 5*
The Firebirds ended the season with the program's second ever Regular Season title (second in four years), Coach Mahaffey's 5th ECC Coach of the Year award and two All-Conference selections (Polina Zelentsova and Celia Bastin).
UDC (6-3, 4-2 ECC) will continue their season in the Spring with hopes of an at large bid in the NCAA tournament.
