Firebirds Propelled to 64-58 Victory Over Knights in ECC Thriller

FLUSHING, N.Y. - the University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team ends the month of November with a flawless record after defeating conference foe Queens College 64-58, Wednesday evening at the Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Firebirds move to 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Knights fall to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Latavia Jackson posted a game-high 20 points shooting 50% from the field and behind the arc, while picking up seven steals. Destiny Ryles was all over the stat sheet with 15 points,  eight steals, seven rebounds and five assists. Tori Williams also posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

The Firebirds opened the first half of play outscoring the Knights in both quarters taking a seven point lead into the break.

The third quarter saw UDC struggle from the field with Queens outscoring them 16-5. A four point lead for the home team heading into the fourth grew to as much as 12 with 4:51 remaining in regulation.

Just when it seemed the Firebirds win streak would come to an end, they quickly turned the tables, digging deep to pull off a 15-1 run, in the final three minutes, to stun the Knights. 

Queen's shot 45.1% from the field compared to UDC's 35.6%. The Firebirds edged the knights with points in the paint (30-28), scored 20 points of fastbreaks and outrebounded them 39-34. Both teams were even in turnovers (23) and points off turnovers (25).

This marks the Firebirds longest win streak since the 2015-16 season and the first 7-0 start, since 2011-12 season. 

Up next, UDC (7-0, 1-0 ECC) will continue conference play at home, hosting Molloy University on Saturday at 1:00pm.
