Firebirds Cruise Past Daemen in ECC Home Men’s Tennis Match
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team defeated East Coast Conference foe Daemen, 7-2 on a beautiful Friday afternoon in the nation's capital.
The Firebirds (4-3, 1-0 ECC) won the top two doubles and top five singles matches, only surrendering two points for No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an insufficient lineup.
Seniors Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Ike Kiro (Business Management – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/NJIT) defeated Kiran Kudaravalli and John LeMar, 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles match, and junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) and senior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) followed with a decisive, 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. UDC led 2-1 at the end of doubles play.
With a forfeit at No. 6 singles, the match score was tied, 2-2 with five singles matches to decide the victor. UDC was victorious in all five.
First Uzcategui defeated Kudaravalli at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-0, 6-1, and Quiroga followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Adam Kerr at the No. 4 spot.
Clinching the match victory with the first duel match singles victory of his career, freshman Drew Stewart (Information Technology – Fort Washington, MD/National Christian Academy) earned an impressive, 6-4, 6-2 victory over John Wilson at No. 5 singles.
Andersson and Kiro would both win their singles matches in succession at No. 3 and No. 2, respectively, and close out the match.
UDC has a week off before its next match on March 28th when it travels to non-conference opponent Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia.
