Firebirds Open Season at Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, SC– The University of the District of Columbia women's track & field team had a strong showing in their season opener, securing top finishes in multiple events. 

Freshman Kyndra Hines led the way in the 100m hurdles, posting a 15.02s finish to place 9th overall, while Kayleigh Shelton followed with a time of 15.71s, earning 18th place. In the 400m hurdles, junior Samantha Morrison clocked 1:09.54, finishing 16th, while freshman Yalix Lina crossed the line in 1:10.86, securing 23rd place.

Morrison also captured 1st place in the 800m with a time of 2:25.19, while Lina followed in 5th place at 2:32.63. Junior Tukey Francis placed 11th with a time of 2:37.82.

In the field events, Emmanuela Katou Kouami placed 8th in the discus throw with a distance of 36.89m (121'0"), and secured 5th place in the hammer throw with a 46.60m (152'10") mark. Junior Ryana Goldson also competed in the discus, throwing 25.62m (84'0"), and finished 18th in the javelin throw with a mark of 25.25m (82'10").

Junior Zoe Shaw finished 10th in the high jump (1.55m, 5'1") and 8th in the long jump (5.18m, 17'0"). Senior Kensley Benjamin also secured 4th place (10.07m, 33'0.5") in the triple jump.

In relay action, the 4x100m relay team of Mariela Hernandez, Shelton, Janel Baxter, and Hines clocked a time of 50.10 seconds, finishing 14th overall.

The Firebirds are back in action on March 28-29, at the Towson Invitational.
