Winning Start to Spring Season for Women’s Tennis

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Tennis team started the spring season with a convincing 5-2 win over Jefferson University Sunday afternoon.

The Firebirds with an impressive 12-2 record were caught out in doubles when they gave up two of the games to lose the overall point in doubles. However, a win for senior Estefania Castrillon and Sofia Bellucco at No.3 doubles gave the Firebirds motivation heading into singles play.

Singles proved to be a different story for UDC as they took five straight points to steal the win. Wins came through Bellucco at No. 4 (6-2, 6-3), then shortly followed by Joanna Skrzypczynska at No.3 (6-4, 6-2), and at No.5 Izabella Bilecova took a resounding 6-0, 6-0 win.

UDC clenched overall victory through the win by Castrillon at No.6 (6-2, 6-1) to go 2-0 on the day for doubles and singles. She would be followed by senior Marija Milic at No.2 defating her opponent 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The only loss of the day came in a tough battle at No.1 by Simoné Pärn.

The Firebirds returned to action against Chestnut Hill today.
