District of Columbia Women's Tennis Succumbs to NYIT in ECC Semifinals
FLUSHING, NY - The reigning East Coast Conference champion University of the District of Columbia Firebirds succumbed to NYIT, 5-0 in the conference tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at Queens College.
In a rematch of last year's ECC Finals won by the Firebirds, No. 3 seeded District of Columbia could not overcome forfeit losses at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an insufficient lineup, as it was shut out by the No. 2 seeded Bears. NYIT advances to play the winner of the next semifinal match between No. 1 seeded host, Queens, and No. 4 Molloy.
The Firebirds were defeated at No. 1 and 2 doubles by identical scores of 8-3 and forfeited the No. 3 doubles match due to an insufficient lineup. Trailing 4-0 after forfeiting the No. 6 singles match, District of Columbia's No. 1 singles player, junior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering - Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) was defeated, 6-0, 6-0 by Nelly Ciolkowski, a transfer from Clemson. With Ciolkowski's victory, NYIT won the match, 5-0.
With the loss, District of Columbia is now 6-3 on the season. The Firebirds' final scheduled match of the fall is Oct. 13 at Chowan.
