Firebirds Fall to Mavericks in Road Conference Match Up

Dobbs Ferry, NY — In a competitive East Coast Conference matchup, the University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team fell short against Mercy College, losing 80-66 at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center. With just seven available players the Firebirds found themselves in early foul trouble, which proved detrimental in the end. 

UDC kept pace with Mercy in the first half, trailing 38-33 at the break. The Mavericks pulled away in the third quarter with a decisive 27-17 run, creating a gap that proved insurmountable for the Firebirds. Mercy capitalized on their rebounding edge, finishing with a 43-39 advantage on the boards.

Laci Johnson led the Firebirds offense with a team-high 25 points, 3 rebounds and two steals. Kensley Benjamin contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Brenda Mckinney also posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. For Mercy, Grace Lesko dominated with 30 points and 13 rebounds, while Angelina Barrera chipped in 21 points and 8 rebounds.
