Game Day Preview: Women's Basketball Conference Match Up Against Roberts Wesleyan

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team heads to N.Y. to face off against Roberts Wesleyan University, on MLK Day.

Scouting UDC 

The Firebirds head into this conference match up, on the heels of a two game conference win streak. UDC defeated Molloy University on Wednesday 63-48, and then defeated Queens College over the weekend 73-62. Destiny Ryles led the team with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in the win over Molloy and Latavia Jackson led with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in the home win over Queens. Tori Williams also had an impressive showing on the week, grabbing 16 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win over Queens. Ryles currently leads the ECC in points  averaging 17.0 PPG, and Jackson is second with 16.0 PPG. Both have also earned ECC Player of the Week honors this season. Ryles also leads the conference in steals and assists per game. UDC is currently 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. They currently average 68 PPG and hold their opponenets to 63.9 PPG. They opened up conference play defeating preseason favorites St Thomas Aquinas College 68-58 at the end of November. UDC entered the 2022-23 season voted to place third in the ECC preseason poll. They finished 13-15 last season and had their first post season appearance in the conference since 2016. This marked the first under head coach John Nakpodia. 

Scouting RWU

The Redhawks head into this match up 2-11 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.  Georgia Haverlock and Grace Galgano leads the Redhawks avergaing 11.5 and 11.4 PPG which is good for 9th and 10th in the conference. Galgano has recieved Rookie of the Week honors three times so far this season. Haverlock is also 15th in the conference avergaing 5.8 RPG. The Redhawks avergae 58.6 PPG as a team and allow 70.9 PPG for their opponents. Roberts was voted to place 5th in the ECC preseason poll after finishing 17-13, 10-8 in the ECC last season. So far their lone conference win of the season came from a victory over Molloy. 

History

RWU defeated the Firebirds in both match ups last season. The all-time meeting record between these two teams is 13-5, in favor of the Redhawks. The last time UDC was able to defeat RWU was during the 2015-16 season.
