
Firebirds Survive Closely Contested Match Up Against Tigers
SALEM, WV- The University of the District of Columbia fought their way back into the win column after defeating Salem University 56-54 in a non conference match up on Wednesday night. The Firebirds improved to 7-7 on the season while the Tigers fell to 7-11.
Destiny Ryles led the Firebirds with a team high 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds, four assists and a steal. Latavia Jackson also scored in the double figures, with 15 points while grabbing six boards and a team high three steals. Tori Williams pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams, but the Firebirds managed to go into the second quarter with the one point lead. UDC shook off the first quarter slump and produced a 21 point quarter and began to pull away from Salem, leading by as much as 11 points with 1:53 to go before half-time.
The Tigers rallied back coming off the break, out-scoring the Firebirds 15-11 but UDC would hold on to the lead going into the final quarter. Salem forced UDC to work for the win as the fourth quarter saw a series of lead changes. In the end the Firebirds managed to walk away with the the two point win.
Both teams struggled offensively with the Firebirds going 20-65 and the Tigers 19-65 from the field. UDC had the edge on rebounds (51-44) and while they had fewer turnovers (14-15), Salem managed to convert more points (8-6).
Up Next, UDC (7-7, 2-1 ECC) will host D'Youville University on Friday evening at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex. Tip off is set for 7:30 PM.
