Dobbs Ferry, NY - #6 District of Columbia men's soccer team is headed back to the ECC Championship Final for the second time in as many seasons, after upsetting #2 Mercy University in the ECC Semifinal. Goals from George Shaw and Ignacio Lopez, along with a stellar performance from goalkeeper Giovanni Llamas, propelled the Firebirds to victory.
UDC struck first just before halftime when George Shaw scored his second goal of the season, heading in a corner kick by Ignacio Lopez, in the 45th minute, giving the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.
Mercy responded quickly in the second half with a goal by Mateo Bacigalupo, assisted by Hugo Martin, in the 52nd minute to level the match at 1-1.
In the 60th minute, Ignacio Lopez delivered the game-winning goal for UDC from the penalty spot that was earned by Isaiah Daniel, bringing his season total to five goals. Despite relentless pressure from Mercy, Giovanni Llamas made 11 crucial saves to secure the win for the Firebirds.
