Emmanuela Katou Kouami- Track & Field
"I had no plans on continuing track after high school, but UDC saw potential in me and recruited me to join the Firebird community."
For junior thrower Emmanuela Katou Kouami, the journey to the University of the District of Columbia has been nothing short of transformative. Initially stepping away from competitive athletics after high school, Emmanuela found her fire rekindled when UDC offered her a scholarship opportunity that combined both her academic aspirations and athletic talent.
"Subconsciously, pursuing an education out of state was always at the forefront of my mind, so when UDC offered me a scholarship, I was elated."
Since arriving on campus, Emmanuela has made the most of her opportunity—balancing the rigors of being a student-athlete while emerging as one of the top throwers in the East Coast Conference and the East Region. A school-record holder in both the Weight and Hammer Throw, Katou-Kouami recently won the weight throw at the ECC Indoor Track and Field Championship while hitting the NCAA National qualifying provisional mark in the event. She also ended the Season as the top weight thrower in the East Region.
"With this desire fulfilled, I made every effort to take advantage of being a student-athlete—pushing myself in the classroom and on the field to reach my full potential."
Emmanuela currently serves as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee President, and was recently named to the 2024-25 Allstate NACDA Good Works Winter Team earning the School's first-ever NIL Deal. This honor recognizes student-athletes across all sports and divisions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, character, and commitment to community service.
Emmanuela embodies the Firebird spirit—resilient, determined, and committed to excellence. Her journey is a shining example of what happens when opportunity meets preparation, and UDC is proud to be a part of her story.
