Firebirds Open 2013 Cross Country Season at UMES Lid Lifter

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of the District of Columbia opened its 2013 cross country season at the UMES Lid Lifter with strong finishes from last season's team most valuable runner, sophomore Simone Grant and freshman newcomer Kay-Tiarra Johnson.

Grant (Health Education – Bronx, NY/Pelham Prep Academy) and Johnson (Psychology – Hempstead, NY/Hempstead HS) ran in tandem for most of the 5K race with Simone Grant finishing 20th in the field of 42 runners with a time of 22:43, and Johnson directly behind her with a time of 22:45 for 21st.

Next up for the Firebirds was junior Kimoy Mais (Mass Media – St. Andrew, Jamaica/St. Andrew HS) with a time of 24:54 for 29th overall. Junior Jerily Benjamin (Health Education – Queens, NY/Phillip Randolph) and senior Atiya Amis (Mass Media – Washington, DC/Dunbar HS) were both directly behind Mais, finishing 30th and 31st with times of 25:07 and 25:26, respectively. They rounded out the top 5 for the Firebirds to score in the meet.

UDC finished 5th overall competing against all Division I schools: Morgan State, Norfolk State, UMES and Delaware State University.

The Firebirds venture to Brookville, NY next weekend, September 14th to get reacquainted with the LIU Post Course which will host the ECC Championships later in the season.
