Strong Effort by Newcomers Lead District of Columbia Women's Cross Country at DSU Invitational

SMYRNA, DE - The University of the District of Columbia women's cross country team opened its season at the Delaware State University Invitational finishing 6th of seven teams.

The Firebirds were led by a 22nd place finish by junior Mass Media major Rochelle Nelson (Kingston, Jamaica - Holmwood Technical HS) with a time of 23:06 in a field of 82 runners. Freshman Health Education major Simone Grant (Bronx, NY - Christopher Columbus HS) finished 28th with a time of 23:48, followed by senior Marketing major Callister Jones (Fort Washington, MD - Oxon Hill HS) who was 30th in a time of 24:09. Freshman Forensic Psychology major Christina Baker (Kingston, Jamaica - Christopher Columbus HS) finished 33rd overall with a time of 24:30 with sophomore Business Management major Kimoy Mais (St. Andrew, Jamaica - St. Andrew HS) rounding out District of Columbia's top-5 with a time of 25:15 for 40th overall. Freshman Jerily Benjamin (New York, NY - Philip Randolph HS) was 41st in 25:45 with junior Mass Media major Kaydian Jones (Kingston, Jamaica - St. Andrew HS) 45th in 27:09.

Head coach Alton McKenzie was very encouraged by how both the team's newcomers and veterans ran in the first meet of the season.

"It was great to see all the newcomers perform well in their first meet," McKenzie said. "Rochelle ran a controlled and even race to lead the group, and freshmen runners Simone Grant, Christina Baker,and Jerily Benjamin ran exceptional in their first meet as college athletes. I look forward to Callister Jones leading the group as they build on this first outing, and I anticipate continued improvement from our entire team as the season progresses."
