Strong Effort by Newcomers Lead District of Columbia Women's Cross Country at DSU Invitational
SMYRNA, DE - The University of the District of Columbia women's cross country team opened its season at the Delaware State University Invitational finishing 6th of seven teams.
The Firebirds were led by a 22nd place finish by junior Mass Media major Rochelle Nelson (Kingston, Jamaica - Holmwood Technical HS) with a time of 23:06 in a field of 82 runners. Freshman Health Education major Simone Grant (Bronx, NY - Christopher Columbus HS) finished 28th with a time of 23:48, followed by senior Marketing major Callister Jones (Fort Washington, MD - Oxon Hill HS) who was 30th in a time of 24:09. Freshman Forensic Psychology major Christina Baker (Kingston, Jamaica - Christopher Columbus HS) finished 33rd overall with a time of 24:30 with sophomore Business Management major Kimoy Mais (St. Andrew, Jamaica - St. Andrew HS) rounding out District of Columbia's top-5 with a time of 25:15 for 40th overall. Freshman Jerily Benjamin (New York, NY - Philip Randolph HS) was 41st in 25:45 with junior Mass Media major Kaydian Jones (Kingston, Jamaica - St. Andrew HS) 45th in 27:09.
Head coach Alton McKenzie was very encouraged by how both the team's newcomers and veterans ran in the first meet of the season.
