Shakira Watford Wins Bowie Cross-Country Classic

BOWIE,MD: October 13, 2006— UDC Freshman Shakira Watford (Willingboro, NJ) won her first cross-country event of the 2006  season by outpacing runners from three different schools to capture the Bowie State University Homecoming Cross-Country Classic  today in Bowie, Maryland.  The 5,000 meter run featured runners from Columbia Union College, Bowie State and the University of the District of Columbia.

Watford placed first by finishing the course with a time of 22:46 minutes. Bowie’s Jamese Cobb placed second with a time of 23:31 minutes, and UDC’s freshman Shelsmith Kariuki (Zambia) came in third with a time of 24:05 minutes.

UDC’s Patricia Ofori came in 5th place, while sophomore Danielle Cook (Willingboro, N.J) came in 9th, and freshman Anna Sylvester (Bronx, NY) came in 10th place.

The Lady Firebirds will next compete in the Hood College Classic on October 21, in Frederick, Maryland.
