UDC Women’s Volleyball Concludes New York Road Trip with a 1-2 Mark

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The  UDC Women's Volleyball Team played three games in two days, falling to Queens College and Assumption but defeating Mercy College.  The Firebirds fell to Queens College 3-1 on Friday night at 7:00 PM in Flushing, NY.  UDC then rallied at 12:00 PM today to defeat Mercy College 3-1.  The Firebirds returned to action again right away as they took on Assumption at 2:00 PM, falling 3-1.  The Firebirds return to Washington, DC with a 10-18 record on the year.

In the Queens match on Friday night, the two teams participated in ceremonies to honor the ECC's "Dig Pink" week which raised funds for breast cancer awareness research.  The Knights disposed of the Firebirds in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19).  The Firebirds were paced by junior outside hitter Vanessa Garley (Rio Rancho, NM - Rio Rancho HS) with 14 kills and junior libero Grace Perilli (Lewisburg, WV – Independence HS) with 27 digs.

On Saturday, The Mercy match was well contested, going into five games, one of the few times this year the Firebirds have played all five games of a match.  The Firebirds stayed together, however, and outlasted the Mavericks by a score of 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-10, 15-10).  In the Mercy match the Firebirds were led by senior setter/ right side Grace DeMichelis (Aurora, CO – Overland HS) with 13 kills and 9 digs, as well as Grace Perilli with 22 digs. 

In the second match of the day, the firebirds fell to Assumption by a score of 3-1 (16-25, 21-25, 25-16, 13-25) The Firebirds dropped the first two sets versus Mercy falling behind 2-0.  They then rebounded to win the third set.  But Assumption proved to be too much for UDC, winning the fourth set and closing out the match. Vanessa Garley had 16 kills and 4 serve aces while freshman setter Kamene Rose (Chula Vista, CA – Hilltop HS) has 21 assists for the Firebirds.

The Firebirds return to action on Monday at home against Bowie State at 7:00 pm.  Monday's match is senior day for the Firebirds.
