UDC Women's Volleyball Defeats Queens College (NY) for First ECC Victory

Washington DC– The UDC Women's Volleyball Team moved to 1-3 in the East Coast Conference today with a 3-0 victory over ECC foe Queens College.  The Firebirds are now 5-9 overall while the Knights fall to 2-5 and 0-2 in the conference. Queens has not won in five tries on the road in 2011.

In the first set, the Firebirds and Knights went back and forth until junior outside hitter/ middle back Vanessa Garley ( Rio Rancho, NM- Rio Rancho HS ) made two key plays that gave UDC a 23-21 lead. Queens subsequently tied the score at 25 all. UDC pulled ahead to win the first set 27-25. Senior setter/ outside hitter Grace DeMichelis ( Aurora, CO – Overland HS ) had 11 total attacks and 5 digs leading the charge. De Michelis would be a factor all day.

The second set saw UDC start off well, but again the contest took a see-saw approach, with the Firebirds eventually winning, 25-22. Garley and DeMichelis again led the way.

The third set was well contested as Queens refused to quit. Garley roamed the net area with great skill and she helped break open a tight set that saw UDC get to an 18-13 advantage, but the Knights from New York kept coming back. The set was won by UDC, 25-22, thus giving them their first win in the East Coast Conference.

The Firebirds were led by junior Vanessa Garley with 11 kills. Grace DeMichelis had 26 total attacks and 10 digs. Junior libero / outside hitter Grace Perilli played a solid match with 14 total attacks and 10 digs.

UDC returns to action Sunday afternoon at 3pm when they take on the Molloy College Lions at the Sports Complex on campus.
