Firebirds Sweep Bowie State,3-0, On Senior Night

Washington, DC: October 28, 2010-- In a high spirited match, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team celebrated Senior Night by defeating the Bowie State University Bulldogs, 3-0, tonight at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC.  Senior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Political Science-Anthony, NM), playing in her final home match, paced the Firebirds to victory with 11 kills , 1 service ace, and 3 digs.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-16, and 25-17. The Firebirds improved their season record to 18-5 with this win, while the Bulldogs fell to 4-25.

UDC finished the match with a .417 hitting percentage compared  to Bowie's .270. Bowie stayed surprisingly close during the match, with the lead actually changing 3 times and the score tied 8. However the 42 Firebirds kills to 25 for the Bulldogs tells the whole story, as Bowie couldn't lay down enough kills to keep up with the Firebirds' hitting power.

Senior middle hitter Ashley Jefferson (Accounting-Manvel,TX) and junior outside hitter Grace DeMichelis (Political Science-Aurora, CO) made 7 kills apiece in helping to provide the team leadership in scoring. Jefferson also closed out her home match career with 4 service aces and 8 digs. Senior setter Joi Upton (Computer Science-Baltimore, MD) finished her home career by giving 18 set assists to her teammates.   Senior libero Carmen Smith (Nursing-Houston,TX) finished her home career by lifting 4 digs to help give the Firebirds the win. Kassondra Greis led the Bulldog scoring with 8 kills, 3 service aces and 1 dig.

The Firebirds travel to St. Mary's City, Maryland this weekend, to play in the St. Mary's University Seahawk Invitational Tournament.
