UDC Women's Volleyball Hands Goldey Beacom,3-0, Defeat

Wilmington, DE: September 18, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team played a very aggressive offensive game and applied a stifling defense to dominate the match and hand the Goldey Beacom Lightning a, 3-0, defeat today in Wilmington, Delaware.  The Firebirds won the match with scores of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-18, to improve their season record to 7-4.

Senior middle hitter Karen Trevino(Political Science major-Anthony, NM) and junior setter/ middle hitter  Grace DeMichelis  ( Business major-Aurora, Co) led the Firebirds scoring with 9 kills apiece. Trevino also tallied  5 service aces, 2 digs, 1 solo block and 1 block assist, while DeMichelis had 7 kills, 3 service aces, 5 digs, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.  Vanessa Garley, a sophomore(Business major)  outside hitter from Rio Rancho , New Mexico added 7 kills, 2 service aces , 1 dig, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.

The Firebirds had 76 team attacks, 34 total kills and amassed a .329 total hitting average, .529 in the first set alone, while holding the Lightning to a .000 average. Firebirds setter senior Joi Upton (Computer Science major-Baltimore, MD) delivered 15 set assists for her teammates, with fellow setter DeMichelis adding 7.

The Firebirds return home to host the Virginia State University Trojans on Monday,  September 20, at 7 p.m.
