UDC Drops Two at NOVA Southeastern Tournament

Ft. Lauderdale, FL: September 10, 2010—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team lost two matches today at the NOVA Southeastern University Shark's Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Firebirds fell to the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns, 3-0, in the first match, and then succumbed to the host NOVA Southeastern Sharks, 3-0, in the second match. The Firebirds fell to 5-2 for the season with these losses, the first this year.

Three players led the Firebirds scoring, with 4 kills each in the Arkansas Tech match.  Senior outside hitter Ashley Jefferson (Accounting major-Manvel, TX), sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Garley (Business major-Rio Rancho, NM), and sophomore outside hitter Grace Perilli (Economics major-Nashville, TN) . The match scores were 25-11, 25-15, and 25-17.  Junior setter Grace DeMichelis (Political Science major-Aurora, Co) led the Firebirds in assists with 13.  Laura Farney led Arkansas Tech scoring with 8 kills, followed by Casey Loper with 5 kills.

In the second match against NOVA Southeastern, Garley led the Firebird attack with 6 kills. The final scores for the match were 25-21, 25-6, and 25-21.

Tournament play continues on Saturday, September 11, at 11 a.m., when the Firebirds play the University of Minnesota-Mankato in their first match of the day, followed by a match with the University of Minnesota- Duluth at 1:30 p.m.
