UDC Sweeps Virginia Union, 3-0, in Volleyball

 Washington, DC: September 2, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team defeated the Virginia Union University Panthers, 3-0, tonight, in their season opener at the UDC Sports Complex. The Firebirds swept the Panthers in 3 sets with scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12 in the high spirited contest.

 Two players paced the Firebirds to the win. Senior middle hitter, biology major,  Karen Trevino (Anthony, NM) and junior outside hitter, business major  Vanessa Garley (Rio Rancho, NM) each made 14 kills to lead the team to victory.

 UDC held commanding leads throughout the match and left little room for Union to maneuver. Also tallying kills for the Firebirds were senior middle hitter, accounting major, Ashley Jefferson (Manvel, TX) with 7, junior outside hitter, business major Mirella Nunez (Sao' Paulo, Brazil) with 4, junior outside hitter, economics major, Grace Perilli (Thompson Station, TN) with 3, junior setter, business major Gracie DeMichelis (Aurora, CO) and senior setter, computer science major Joi Upton (Baltimore, MD) with 1 each.  DeMichelis also delivered 32 set assists to her teammates.

No Union player scored more than 4 kills in the match. Senior outside hitter, criminal justice major Lashira Williams (Palm Bay, Fl) led the Panthers with 4 kills in the losing effort.

UDC travels to Livingstone, North Carolina this weekend to play in the Livingstone College Tournament, September 3-7. In addition to Livingstone, opponents include Spelman College and St. Paul's College in the tri-match.
