UDC Drops Two at Chowan Tri-Match

Murfreesboro, NC: October 3, 2009—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Volleyball Team dropped two matches in the Chowan University Tri-match today in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. In the first match the Shaw University Bears defeated Firebirds 3-2, with UDC winning the third and fourth sets, while Shaw won sets one, two and the fifth deciding set.

Sharetta Riggins, an outside hitter from Alexander City, Alabama, paced the Bears to the win with 19 kills and 5 assists. UDC Junior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Anthony, NM) tallied a match-high 21 kills, 4 service aces and 8 digs to lead the Firebird scoring, followed by junior middle hitter  Ashley Jefferson (Manuel, TX) with 8 kills, 3 service aces, 3 assists and 10 digs.

Later in the evening, host Chowan University defeated the Firebirds in three straight sets, winning with scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-11.  Freshman middle blocker Karina Monroe (Spotsylvania, VA) led the Hawks to the win. Karen Trevino led the Firebird scoring with 9 kills and 5 digs.

UDC (1-8) will return to the courts at home on Saturday, October 10, at 1 p.m., hosting the Bowie State University Bulldogs in a return match.  The Firebirds defeated the Bulldogs, 3-2, in their first match on September 23, at Bowie.
