Firebirds Soar Past the Wildcats and into the ECC Championship Finals

FLUSHING N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team defeated Daemen College in the ECC semifinal round 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Queens College Tennis Center to advance to the finals.

The Firebirds (10-0) won the doubles point with wins at No.2 and 3 before heading into singles play. They then went on to secure wins at No.4, 5, and 6 to advance to the finals.

Mariona Franco and Claudia Bahamon snatched up the first win for the Firebirds with a shutout victory at No.3. Joanna Skrzypczynska teamed up with Laura Marie to defeat Mackenzie Schayes and Yinett Del Leon 6-2 at No.2, to secure the doubles point.

Marie went on to win the first doubles point at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. She was followed by Skrzypczynska and Valentina Brienza who cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories at No.4 and 6.

UDC will face off against the No.3 seed and two-time defending ECC Champs, Queens College in the finals. The Firebirds defeated the Knights for the first time in program history earlier this season and look to repeat that performance tomorrow at 12 noon. The match will be live-streamed on the ECC Sports network.
