Firebirds Shutout Bobcats in Season-Opener

FROSTBURG, Md- The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team swept both singles and doubles play in a 7-0 shutout victory over Frostburg State. Simoné Pärn led the Firebirds at No.1 in both singles and doubles.

The first doubles win came from newcomers Laura Marie and Mariona Franco in their Firebird debut with a 6-1 victory at No. 2. Pärn and teammate Sofia Bellucco would then secure the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1. Joanna Skrzypczynska and freshman, Valentina Brienza closed out doubles play with a victory at No.3.

Franco went on to win the first singles point for the Firebirds shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No.2. She was followed by teammate Skrzypczynska at No.3 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Pärn would then secure the winning match point with a 7-5,7-5 victory over opponent Lorena Pintar at No.1.

Bellucco, Marie, and freshman Claudia Bahamon all went on to secure their victories at No 4,5, and 6 respectively.

Next up UDC will compete in the ITA East Regional Championship set for Friday, September 17-19.
