Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Dowling, 9-0
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team swept its second straight opponent in as many days, cruising, 9-0 past East Coast Conference foe Dowling on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-0.
The highlight of the afternoon came when senior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaqil) avenged last year's tough loss to Dowling's Robyn Romanoff with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
"I'm especially happy for Jessica's win today," head coach Dickie Mahaffey said. "Her rivalry with Robyn has been special – they are both terrific players, and it has been a privilege to watch these two go head-to-head the last four years."
The Firebirds earned victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles and No. 1-through5 singles and Dowling forfeited the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches due to an insufficient lineup.
"I'm very happy with how the team is competing and maintaining their focus thus far," Mahaffey said. "Two shutout wins is a nice way to start off the season."
UDC will next host Shepherd on Wednesday, September 18th at 2:30 p.m.
