University of the District of Columbia Women's Tennis Ranked No. 2 in NCAA East Region Poll

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team is ranked No. 2 in the first NCAA East Region poll of the season released on March 28th, 2012.

The Firebirds have an overall record of 12-3, which includes six shutout victories and a 5-4 victory over the No. 6 team in the region, Adelphi. District of Columbia, the reigning East Coast Conference champion from the Fall season, has only one loss in Division II play, and that is to the No. 1 team in the region and ECC foe, Queens College.

UDC is 60-23 in singles play and 32-13 in doubles action as a team this year. Senior Maria Vitkina leads the team with 12 singles wins at the No. 3 singles spot and Maxime Duijst and Kristyna Nepivodova have teamed up for a team-best 12 wins at No. 2 doubles.

ECC coach of the year Dickie Mahaffey and his Firebirds squad has three matches remaining on its Spring schedule, including tomorrow's showdown in Philadelphia with the region's No. 5 team, Chestnut Hill College at 1:00 p.m. The Griffins, of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, are 18-4 this season and have won five of their last six matches. They are also 8-0 at home this season. The Firebirds won the last meeting in Washington, DC by a very close, 5-4 verdict.
