Schamens Sets Program Records to Lead the Firebirds in a Tough Fight Against the Griffins

LAFAYETTE HILL, PA- Despite only having ten players on the field, the University of the District of Columbia's women's lacrosse team put a strong fight against Chestnut Hill, Monday afternoon at Victory Field #1. The Firebirds eventually fell to the Griffins 19-14.

Freshman attackman Anna Schamens, who made the ECC weekly honor roll for her double hat trick last week, set a new program record for goals scored in a game (9) and points scored in a game (12). She posted a game-high nine goals and three assists to lead the Firebird offense to a new program record for the most goals scored in a game (14). Sarai Reyes-Roman also scored her first hat trick of the season and had a team-high, three caused turnovers. Defenseman Desiree Gaeckler, who had to step in as the Goalkeeper, made a game-high six saves.

Reyes-Roman struck first for the Firebirds, in response to an early Griffin goal. Shamens scored the next five goals for UDC in the rest of the half to bring the score to 8-12 in favor of Chestnut Hill, going into the break.

The third quarter saw the Firebirds on fire, with the defense only allowing one goal while the trio of Michelle Mitchell, Schamens, and Reyes-Roman each netted a goal to bring the game within three points.

Schamens went on to seal the deal as the program's record holder for goals and points, knocking down UDC's three goals in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Firebirds came up short as the Griffins were able to pull off the 19-14 win.

UDC (0-4, 0-0 ECC) will host Dominican College, Sunday at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex Field. The game will be live-streamed on the ECC Network and is set for a 12:00 pm start time.
