In a game pitting two HBCU women's lacrosse teams still in the very early stages of building programs, the Hornets (1-12), were able to earn the school's historic first program victory in this, their 3rd season of play, while resigning the Firebirds (0-8) – a 2nd year program - to remain winless through 18 games.

Junior midfielder Amber Walls (Biology – Temple Hills, MD/Surrattsville HS) led the Firebirds with game-highs of three goals and seven shots. She also had a team-best four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jazmin Lopez (Graphic Design – Pembroke Pines, FL/Charles W. Ten different DSU players registered goals including Kayla Yurkanin and Emily Etkins with three goals apiece. Lauren Perry also added three points on one goal and two assists and had a game-high six draw controls.

The Hornets out-shot UDC, 35-11, doubled-up the Firebirds in draw controls, 16-8, and had only half as many turnovers (6-vs.-12).

UDC sophomore goalkeeper Dani Falco (Elementary Education – Middletown, NY/Valley Central HS) stopped 10 of 28 shots she faced in a complete game effort. Meanwhile, DSU's Rhian Sellers stopped 2-of-6 shots to earn the victory.

DSU scored five goals within the first three minutes of regulation and led 8-0 less than 12 minutes into the game. Walls scored UDC's only goal of the first half at the 16:54 mark, but the Hornets kept on the attack, scoring the final seven goals of the half to take a commanding, 15-1 lead at the break.

The hosts led 16-1 after scoring the first goal of the 2nd half when Walls added back-to-back goals in a short span to pull UDC within 16-3. DSU responded with two more goals to extend its lead to 18-3 before Lopez scored for UDC with just 35 seconds left in regulation to make the final score, 18-4.

UDC will return to East Coast Conference play on Friday as they host LIU Post at Woodrow Wilson HS at 3 p.m.
