Firebirds Women’s Lacrosse Sets Program Record with Five Goals in Loss to Young Harris

ARLINGTON, VA – Senior midfielder Amber Walls broke her own individual school record for goals in a game as she scored four of the Firebirds' team record-setting five goals in a 21-5 loss to non-region opponent Young Harris on Wednesday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

UDC (0-3) surrendered the game's first eight goals in a little over 15 minutes of action, but sophomore attack Jazmin Lopez (Graphic Design – Pembroke Pines, FL/Charles W. Flanagan HS) scored her first goal of the season to put the Firebirds on the board with an unassisted breakaway goal right around the 11-minute mark.

Just a little over a minute later, Walls scored the first of her four goals on a free-position shot to pull the Firebirds within six, 8-2. Walls added a second goal in the opening half with 1:27 remaining, but the Mountain Lions would take a 10-3 lead at halftime.

Young Harris scored three goals in the opening 2:18 of the closing half to extend its lead to 13-3 before Walls added her 3rd goal of the afternoon (2nd free-position goal) at the 26:25 mark. The Mountain Lions then used an 8-0 run over the next 23 minutes to run their lead up to 21-4 with 2:55 remaining.

Still, the Firebirds showed no quit as they out-shot YHC 5-0 in the final 2:55 and got their school-record setting 5th goal of the game on another free-position attempt by Walls with 30 seconds left in regulation.

UDC nearly had its sixth goal of the day in the waning seconds of regulation when sophomore defender Dominique Dotson (Political Science – Coram, NY/Liberty) won the draw control and charged the net on a breakaway, but she had her shot sail over the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dani Falco (Elementary Education – Middletown, NY/Valley Central HS) stopped 13 of 34 shots she faced in a complete game effort.

UDC has a 10-day break before its next game on March 21st at non-region opponent Chowan.
