Game Day Preview: Women's Basketball Conference Match Up Against St Thomas Aquinas

SPARKHILL N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team heads to N.Y. to face off against St Thomas Aquinas College to kick off the second round of conference play

Scouting UDC 

The Firebirds heads into the second round of conference match ups tied for third in the conference with a 5-3 record. They defeated the, then #1 team Daemen University at home last weekend. Latavia Jackson led with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, and teammate Destiny Ryles posted 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Jackson was named the Player of the week and currently leads the conference averaging 17.1 and Ryles is second with 16.7 PPG. Ryles also leads the conference in steals and assists per game. UDC is currently 10-9 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. They currently average 67.9 PPG and hold their opponenets to 64 PPG. They opened up conference play defeating preseason favorites St Thomas Aquinas College 68-58 at the end of November. UDC entered the 2022-23 season voted to place third in the ECC preseason poll. They finished 13-15 last season and had their first post season appearance in the conference since 2016. This marked the first under head coach John Nakpodia. 

Scouting STAC

The Spartan are currently tied for first in the conference standings with a 6-2 record. Their only losses in the first round came from UDC and Mercy. Erin Leary is ranked third in the conference with15.4 PPG and Sarah Ericson is third in the conference in rebounds averaging 9.1 a game. Leary earned defensive player of the week for her performance last week. STAC is regionally ranked with a 14-5 record and is currently on a three game win streak. The Spartans avergae 66.9 PPG and allow 60.1 PPG for their opponents. Roberts was voted the favorites in the ECC preseason poll after finishing 14-15, 12-6 in the ECC last season.
