Firebirds Overcome Slow Start to Soar Past the Dolphins 58-44

WASHINGTON, D.C- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated the College of Staten Island 58-44, to secure another conference win, Saturday afternoon at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex. This win also marks the most wins in a season and the most conference wins for Head Coach Nakpodia since his tenure here at UDC.

UDC featured three double-figure scorers on the afternoon with Halia Ellis and Latavia Jackson posting 13 points apiece and Tori Williams coming off the bench to add 11. Destiny Ryles grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

The Firebirds got off to a slow start, being outscored by the Dolphins 10-2 in the opening minutes. Ellis's two made three-point jumpers from behind the arc kept UDC not too far behind with CSI having the slight three-point edge going into the second quarter.

The home team would get into a rhythm in the second quarter, upping the defense and keeping the visiting Dolphins to just nine points on 20% shooting from the field.

The second half of the game saw the Firebirds slowly pull away to a 14-point victory. UDC outrebounded CSI 59-38 and had more bench points.

UDC (12-13, 8-8 ECC) will travel to N.Y. on Wednesday to face off against St Thomas Aquinas College in the first round of a doubleheader. The tip-off is set for 5:30 pm and will be live-streamed on the ECC network.
