Ryles Nets Season High 25 in Firebirds Conference Victory over the Knights

WASHINGTON, DC. – Freshman guard Destiny Ryles netted a season-high, game-high, and team-high 25 points to lead the University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team to a 77-68 conference win over Queens College, Saturday afternoon at the UDC Gymnasium.

Ryles went 10-19 from the field and 5-8 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed eight boards and registered team-highs of seven assists and eight steals. Teammate Latavia Jackson posted her third double-double of the season on 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The visiting Knights took the early lead in the first quarter going on a 7-0 scoring run. Ryles would snap that run and put UDC on the board with a layup at the 7:14 minute mark.

The Firebirds turned up the heat a notch in the second quarter outscoring the Knights 20-6, causing nine forced turnovers, and outrebounding them 15-12. UDC would take a 21-point lead into halftime.

UDC went on to extend that lead early in the third quarter to 27 but then the tables turned as the knights came back to have their best scoring quarter with 29 points while holding the Firebirds to just 13.

Queens turned a 27-point lead and shaved it down to a one-point game with 8:45 remaining in regulation. Both teams went back and forth but UDC was successful in making sure that the Knights never took the lead. Two pairs of free throws by Halia Ellis and Jackson in the last few seconds sealed the deal with a 77-68 victory.

UDC (6-4, 2-0 ECC) is back in action at home on Wednesday, December 15 against Goldey-Beacom College. The tip-off is set for 5:00 pm.
