Firebirds Fall on the Road at No. 6 Concordia
BRONXVILLE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team visited the No. 6 ranked team in Division II, Concordia College, for an East Region match on Sunday, March 16th. The Firebirds were defeated, 9-0.
Offir Ginat and Tomasz Olfans got the Clippers off on the right foot with an 8-2 win over senior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and Drew Stewart (Information Technology – Fort Washington, MD/National Christian Academy) in the No. 3 doubles match. Shortly thereafter, Ricardo Frey and Rafael Ferreira earned an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 match over junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) and freshman Simon Jackermeier (Business Management – Munich, Germany/Theresien-Gymnasium Munich). Concordia completed the doubles sweep as the No. 1 pair of Benas Majauskas and Daniele Piludu secured an 8-4 win over seniors Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Ike Kiro (Business Management – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/NJIT).
Concordia went on to sweep all six singles matches as well, though, not without a battle from reigning First Team All-East Coast Conference selection, Uzcategui in the No. 1 match. Ultimately, Juuso Ojanen outlasted Uzcategui, 6-4, 6-4.
The Firebirds' challenging schedule continues as they travel a short distance down town to play Division I Georgetown on Tues., Mar. 18.
