UDC Falls to Mercy in Soccer, 2-0

Germantown, MD: October 29, 2007- The fiercely determined Mercy College Mavericks fought until they were able to break through the iron clad University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defense to score two goals in the second half to win the  soccer match between the two this afternoon at the SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland.

Merquis Guzman didn’t enter the match until the 72nd minute, but played aggressively and out maneuvered the Firebird defense to score the first Maverick goal in the 78th minute with a cross assist from Mike Fernandes . Michael Frimpong-Manso scored the other Mercy goal in the 81st minute unassisted.

It was a tough loss for the Firebirds, who kept getting the ball in the area of the goal, but couldn’t break through the Maverick defense for a score. UDC took 10 shots to Mercy’s 16, but Mercy goal keeper Carl Spence had 5 goal saves to keep UDC scoreless.

The Firebirds ended their season with a 3-9-1 record, and look to build for the future. UDC Head Coach Khary Stockton honored four members of the team with gifts as they completed their playing career for the Firebirds. Terrence Alleyne, Togba Liberty, Abdoussalam Koly and Pidenam Bodjona were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the UDC soccer program.
