
Big Second Half Propels Firebirds Back into Win Column
BUFFALO, N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team was bale to snap a four game losing streak, after defeating Conference foe D'Youville University 72-63, in a road match up.
Hartnel Haye and Eric Morgan Jr led the way with 17 points apiece. Tevin Curtis posted 14 points and a game-high seven assists. Vernon Simmons went a perefect 3-3 from the field to add seven points.
UDC opened the first half with a 8-2 run but the Saints were able to go a 4-0 run of their own to close the deficit to just two points. Morgan Junior knocked down theee back to back buckets giving UDC back their lead. D'Youville took back the lead but was short lived as Simmons dunked to give UDC the one point lead. Went back and forth with the lead . The Firebirds were plagued by turnovers, turning the ball over 11 times in the first half.Toren Portee's mid range jumper followed by a reverse layup by Micah Campbell gave UDC the lead in the second half with less than 17:30 to go. The Saints went on to retake the lead but at the 11:45 mark, Curtis made a steal and went for the layup to give UDC the lead. Charles Holley Jr was then fouled on a successful three point attempt with the opportunity to put UDC up by three. He knocked down the free throw attempt to make it a four point play, while also giving the Firebirds a lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game.
Due to the impeding snow storm in Buffalo, the double-header against Daemen on Sunday has been postponed. UCDC (5-9, 3-2 ECC) will head to the College of Staten Island next Saturday to continue conference play. Ther game is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
