Firebirds Brave Frigid Temperatures to Open Outdoor Season at Maryland Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - With temperatures more suited for the end of Cross Country Season, the Firebirds got their Outdoor Season off to a chilly start at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational held at Kehoe Field Saturday.

With weather not conducive to fast times, the Firebirds focused on competing and staying healthy. Highlights from the meet for the Firebirds on the track started with the 100M event where sophomore Brittany Okon finished 2nd in Heat 3 with a time of 12.90s to finish 7th overall amongst 22 competitors.

The Firebirds had two competitors in the 400M as well, with senior Jerily Benjamin finishing 7th in the fastest section (Heat 6) with a time of 61.25, and 15th overall among 35 competitors. Her teammate, senior Marlena Wright was 5th in Heat 5, running 61.73 and finishing 18th overall.

UDC's best showing of the day, however, came in the 200M, where all three competitors won their heat. Okon ran 27.48s to win Heat 2 (15th of 23 competitors), junior Christina Baker won Heat 4 with a time of 26.55s (4th overall), and Simone Grant ran 26.51s to win her heat comfortably and finish 2nd best overall amongst 23 competitors.

The Firebirds return to action at the Colonial Relays on Sat., April 3-4, 2015.
