District of Columbia Track & Field Signs Junior College Standout

WASHINGTON, DC – Rochelle Nelson, an experienced runner out of Essex Community College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to run cross country and indoor and outdoor track at the University of the District of Columbia.

"Rochelle's ability to compete in the 200M and 400M is a welcome addition to our team," head coach Alton McKenzie said. "Having competed at the Junior College level bodes well for her competitively, as she's been up against collegiate athletes – including Division I and II athletes throughout the year last season. I expect her to bring that experience to our team and show leadership."

A Kingston, Jamaica native, Nelson attended Holmwood Technical High School and then Essex CC. At both schools she competed in the 200M and 400M events.

The Firebirds featured seven athletes on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-East Region Team this past spring, including the top two runners in the 400M event.

Nelson is an aspiring media broadcaster and will study Media at University of DC.
