Firebirds Finish 4th at Captains Classic Meet

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Outdoor Track & Field team finished 4th out of 14 teams at the Captains Classic & Combined Events meet hosted by Christopher Newport University on Friday, April 14th and Saturday, April 15th.

The Firebirds scored 67.5 points while competing across 11 different events, and they boasted 13 top-10 individual performances and a No. 1 finish in the 4x100M Relay.

Junior Stacy-Ann Rowe ran lead-off followed by freshmen Niasia Harding, Shannell Hibbert, and anchor Temera Duncan, and the four-some beat out eight other teams competing in the event with a 1st place time of 47.64s to score 10 points.

The Firebirds also put forth a 5th place finish in the 4x400M Relay, as junior Kenlyn Duncan, Rowe, freshman Dabrin Snorton, and junior Shayna Hodge earned UDC five points to its team total with a time of 4:08.71.

UDC also featured several quality individual track performances, including a 100 Hurdles event win by Rowe and 2nd place showings by Hibbert and Harding in the 100M and 400M, respectively. Rowe bested six other competitors for 1st place with a time of 14.79s in the 100 Hurdles, Hibbert was 2nd out of 30 competitors with a time of 12.31s in the 100M, and Harding was 2nd out of 28 competitors with a time of 57.71s in the 400M. Meanwhile, Harding was also 5th in the 100M at 12.60s, senior Brittany Okon was 10th at 12.89, and Hibbert (25.49s), Temera Duncan (25.67s) and Rowe (25.77s) took 5th, 6th and 7th, respectively, in the 200M event.

In the field events, Okon had a season-best performance in the Long Jump for a 2nd straight week, leaping out to 5.48M to place 3rd out of 27 competitors. Also, freshman Deasia Greer took 3rd of 10 competitors in the Triple Jump, bounding out to 11.06M, and senior Iman Scott and junior Tajah Franklin placed 9th and 10th, respectively, out of 16 competitors in the Shot Put. Scott had a throw of 9.25M and Franklin 9.05M.

Next up for the Firebirds is the East Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, April 22nd at Clarkstown South HS in West Nyack, NY.
