NEW ORLEANS – The University of the District of Columbia was among a total of 92 institutions to garner the distinction of U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, it was announced Wednesday, July 24th, 2013. Also, junior Kaydian Jones and sophomore Jerily Benjamin each earned Individual All-Academic honors.

The University of the District of Columbia track & field team has had a long journey – one epitomized by the team’s unofficial song “Started from the Bottom” by Drake.

Shauna-Kay Creary opened her Outdoor Campaign in the High Jump clearing 1.55M for 17th of 28 competitors in the event.

PUEBLO, CO – In what was a historic day for University of District of Columbia's Women's Track & Field, junior Shauna-Kay Creary had a career day in the Women's Triple Jump to make the finals in her first time competing in the event at the NCAA Championships. With a new Personal Best of 12.36M on her last jump of the competition, she was able to jump from 9th to 8th overall in the finals, and secure her place as an All-American. She became the first Firebird to not only compete in the Triple Jump but to also be an All-American in the event. She will now set her sights on the High Jump slated for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

INDIANAPOLIS – Shauna-Kay Creary and the 4x400M relay team of Kaydian Jones, Jerily Benjamin, Rochelle Nelson and Simone Grant, will represent the University of the District of Columbia at the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Track & Field Championships on May 23-25th in Pueblo, CO. Creary and the Firebird 4x400M relay team qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Simone Grant, with an agressive move in the anchor leg of the 4x400M, helped the Firebirds become the school's first ever Relay Team to win an event at Colonial Relays.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - With NCAA qualifying marks well within reach based on prior performances, the University of the District of Columbia women’s outdoor track and field squad fulfilled the promise its shown all season by turning in outstanding performances at the UVA Challenge Meet. This meet served as one of the many Last Chance Meets around the country, and the Firebirds took full advantage of the opportunity.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – Junior Kaydian Jones has been named the East Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Co-Athlete of the Year along with Georgian Court University’s Alyssa Hudgins, as voted on by the conference’s coaches. Jones’ outstanding showing in the ECC Outdoor Championship meet also earned her the Most Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet Award.

Jerily Benjamin and the 4x400M relay team placed 2nd with a time of 3:51.96 and are now ranked 34th in Division II.

FAIRFAX, VA - With over 1,000 athletes competing from 36 schools and clubs, the University of the District of Columbia women’s outdoor track and field squad showed why they are a force in the East Coast Conference and the entire East Region with strong performances across the board at the George Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday. The Firebirds finished tied for 15th (with 12 points) among 28 teams that scored points at the meet.
