University of the District of Columbia Women's Track & Field Flexes Muscle at Division I-Dominated Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of the District of Columbia women's track and field squad proved very competitive in a field of mostly Division I schools as it participated in the 2012 Maryland Invitational on Saturday, March 31st.

Highlight the meet for the Firebirds was the 4X100M team of Atiya Amis, Kaydian Jones, Jasmine Smith and Tatyana Commock. They teamed up for a 48.48 finish, which was good for 6th place in the eight-team field - six of which, were Division I schools.

Smith also had an impressive indivual performance in the 100M race, finishing 10th out of 26 competitors with a time of 12.74. Amis followed in 13th with a 12.93.

In the 200M, Jones ran a 25.87 in what was her debut performance in that event. She place 9th overall in a field of 30 competitors. Shauna-Kay Creary followed in 11th place with a 26.18.

Kaneesha Hollis was 13th of 27 competitors with a time of 2:24.08 in the 800M, and Areial Clark was 5th of nine competitors with a 32.19M javelin throw.

In another collegiate debut, UDC volleyball player Amber Walls competed in the long jump event where she tied for 9th place among 20 competitors with a 4.91M jump. Creary matched that jump, as the two Firebird athletes tied for 9th place.

The Firebirds are back in action next week when they travel to Williamsburg, VA to compete in the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary.
