Firebirds Quartet Dominant in Women’s 4x400M at Kehoe Twilight Meet

College Park, MD: May 5, 2011--UDC's Women's 4x400 Team turned in another excellent performance with a convincing win at the Kehoe Twilight Meet held at the University of Maryland. With a strong lead off from sophomore sprinter Callister Jones (Marketing-Fort Washington, MD), the Firebirds dominated the field from the gun to cruise to a comfortable win with a season's best time of 3:48.99.

This is an improvement from their 3:49.74 run at the Penn Relays exactly a week prior. Junior sprinter Kaneesha Hollis (Criminal Justice-Centreville, MD) ran a tremendous 2nd leg to open up the lead significantly while junior sprinter Latoya Allen (Social Work-Washington, DC) and anchor leg Saleena Green maintained that gap to lead the Firebirds to a 5.05 seconds margin of victory.

"Considering we ran close to 1 second faster this week than at the Penn Relays, but pretty much ran against ourselves after the lead off leg, tells me they are ready to run. This time of year it's about competing (regardless of who's in the race) and we're doing just that. We still have a lot to run for so I'm excited about keeping this momentum as we get close to the end of the season. We're peaking at the right time (mentally and physically) and we're looking forward to competing in the weeks to come." said Head  Coach Alton Mckenzie.

Senior Erica Nixon (Health Education-Bronx, NY) also competed in the sprint events for the Firebirds. She won her heat of the 200M comfortably in 26.55 to finish 6th overall.

The Firebirds will compete next at the North Carolina A&T State University Aggie Classic on May 15, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
