Dicoda Waugh Leads UDC at William & Mary Tribe Invitational

Williamsburg, VA: March 20, 2010—Dicoda Waugh led the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Track & Field Team in competition at the College of William & Mary Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Virginia today.  Waugh, who is a junior track & field athlete from Kingston, Jamaica (St. Andrew), won the triple jump with a distance of 11.14 meters, in spite of the fact that she was injured prior to the jump.

UDC opened its 2010 outdoor track and field season at William & Mary, looking to have strong performances at each scheduled meet.  They would not be disappointed today as strong performances came from several of the Firebirds.

Two-time All American Saleena Green (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) turned in a strong performance, running in back-to-back events, finishing 3rd in the 200 meter dash (25.44) and 5th in the 400 meter dash with the time of 58.36. Junior Demia Franklin (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor) did well in the 400 meter hurdles finishing in 2nd place with the time of 1:11.98.

Stacy Griffith, a sophomore from Fredericksburg, Virginia (Riverbend) finished second in the high jump with the distance of 1.60 meters. The UDC 4x400 meter “A” team also turned in a strong performance finishing in 2nd place out of a field of eight with the time of 4:03.13. Members of the team were Franklin, freshman Callister Jones (Fort Washington, MD/Oxon Hill), All-American sophomore Kaneesha Hollis (Centreville, MD/North Caroline) and Green.

Head Track & Field Coach Jasmine Rogers said of her team’s performance, “I’m really happy that we started our season out doing really well. We want to get better from here on.”

UDC returns to the oval on March 26, in the Virginia State University Invite, in Petersburg, Virginia.
