UDC Women’s Track & Field Claim 3rd Place at East Coast Conference Indoor Championship

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Track & Field team finished third overall in a strong outing in the East Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, February 22nd at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Head Coach, Joel Phillip in his final track meet as head Coach, before resuming his role as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operation said, "I am happy with the way the team performed at the meet. In the pre-season we were ranked fourth and we had a little chip on our shoulder as a result because we were third at last year's meet. We did fall short in some of the events but we also had some great performances in others so I am happy with how we did overall and I am overjoyed to see how much fun the ladies had at the meet."

In the 60M dash, senior Shannell Hibbert finished third in a time of 7.83s; she was closely followed by sophomore Shanise Rose who took a respectable fourth place in a time of 7.96s.

The 200M dash saw Hibbert take second place overall in an impressive time of 25.62s. Also, senior Cierra Roberts managed to get on the scoring points finishing fifth in a time of 25.99s.

The next event was the 400M dash, and Roberts again was in action and finished in remarkable fashion to earn second place with a time of 59.04s to add more points to the board for the Firebirds.

Junior Aisha Dozier produced a phenomenal outing in the 500M Dash with a personal best of 1:23.85 finish fifth.

The 60M Hurdles saw the return of Hibbert and Rose who were both outstanding as they placed first and second in times of 8.95s and 9.34s.

With the track events almost over, the last event was the ever popular 4x400M relay for the Firebirds. Yet again, another strong performance in this event saw the team of Dozier, Hibbert, Roberts, and Lavondae Douglas take second place in a time of 4:06.11.

The field events proved to be successful as Roberts competed in the Long Jump and earned a solid second place with a leap of 5.67m. In the Triple Jump, Douglas in her last attempt jumped to fourth place with 11.11m.

This concluded the season for the Firebirds with the Outdoor season starting in March.
