Firebirds Advance to NCAA East Regional 1 Championship!
WILMINGTON, DEL.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team defeated Southern New Hampshire Univesity (SNHU) to the score of 4-1, Monday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Courts.
The duo of Mariona Franco and Claudia Bahamon picked up the Firebirds first win of the day defeating their opponenets 6-2 at the No.3 position. Laura Marie and Celia Bastin sealed the deal, winning at No.2, to give UDC the one point advantage heading into singles play.
The Penmen would even the score 1-1, after winning at No.2, but the tie was short lived as Bahomon defeated her oppoenent in two straight sets at No.6, to regain the Firebirds lead.
Bastin came out victorious at No.5, after battling through a close first set (7-5) and cruising to a 6-1 second set win to put the Firebirds up 3-1.
At courts 1, 3 and 4, all three Firebirds dropped their first sets, but battled back to win their second, forcing tiebreakers. Sofia Bellucco clinched the match for UDC, winning her tiebreaker 6-1.
This marks the Firebirds first NCAA tournament win, since their first appearance back in 2012. UDC deefated Adelphi in Round 1 and defeated SNHU in Round two to make it to the sweet 16.
Up Next, UDC (13-6, 4-1 ECC) will take on the No.1 seed, Wilmington (Del.), tomorrow at noon at the Delcastle Tennis Center, in hopes of punching a ticket to Florida.
